Early-life history of oysters, like in most marine bivalves, is characterized by high fecundity and low survival rate. In hatcheries, which are ecoming more and more important for the production of juveniles for aquaculture production, rearing conditions are optimised (density, feeding, temperature...), and contrast with those observed in the wild. Additionally, slow growing larvae are culled by sieving. |

Oysters, like many marine bivalves, are characterized by very high fecundity and low survival rate at early stages of life. Rearing conditions in hatcheries (i.e. density, feeding, temperature...) are different from those observed in the wild. Additionally, slow growing larvae are culled by sieving. As previous studies have shown that genetic variability exists for several early development traits, we aimed to assess if common hatchery rearing practices exert specific selective processes at the larval stage. In order to avoid possible bias and to increase the number of families studied, we used a mixed-family approach with subsequent parentage analysis using a recently developed set of three multiplexed microsatellite markers. We studied the variance in... |

Stochastic simulations were used to compare genetic progress and inbreeding depending on whether full sib matings were allowed or not when applying individual selection. Fifteen selection cycles were considered, using a single pair mating design. Two levels of heritability (h(2)) were studied (0.1; 0.5) as well as four different proportions of selected animals (2, 5, 10 and 20%), four population sizes (1000, 2,000, 4,000 and 10,000 candidates) and two levels of inbreeding depression (0 and 5% decrease of phenotype for 10% increase in inbreeding). Fifty replicates were generated for each set of parameters. The simulations revealed that avoiding full sib matings became less and less relevant as population size and proportion of selected animals increased and... |

The Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, was introduced from Portugal to the French Atlantic Coast in the 1860s. C. angulata quickly settled and expanded and leaded to the development of a new aquacultural industry in France. In the late 1960s, mortality associated with the detection of an iridovirus, led to the wipe out of C. angulata from French Atlantic waters and to the massive introduction of C. gigas to sustain production. In Southern Europe, similar symptoms were also observed in natural stocks of C. angulata from Sado River (Portugal) and from the area of Cadiz (Spain). Nowadays, only very few «pure» populations of C. angulata remain in southern Europe. These populations are potentially endangered by the current expansion of C. gigas... |

The most known and certainly the most important contribution of genetics to the oyster indus try is the development of the triploid cupped oyster. Released for the first time in the 1980s, the triploid oyster has triplets of chromosomes instead of pairs. Currently, triploid oysters are obtained by crossing diploid and tetraploid oysters. These oysters are characterized by a near lack of milt in summer, which makes them generally popular with consumers, and by a faster growth, allowing a shorter production cycle. In parallel, the exploitation of natural resistance in the diversity of French oysters has been considered to improve the health of farmed populations which is a major challenge for the sustainability of aquaculture farms. Currently, the... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the consistency of the methods of Annicchiarico, Lin & Binns, Wricke, and factor analysis in identifying eucalyptus clones with stability, adaptability, and high productive potential. Eight-four clones, with three years of age, from the genetic breeding program of the company CMPC Celulose Riograndense were used. Three field experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design, in an 84x3 factorial arragement, with 20 replicates of one plant per plot. The clones were evaluated as to diameter at breast height, plant height, and volume of wood. The methods of Annicchiarico and Lin & Binns are highly correlated with each other, and their use together with the method of Wricke is a... |

Several studies have suggested that significant genetic variability might exist for some early developmental traits in the Pacific oyster, C. gigas. However, most studies have examined only limited numbers of families. More critically, these families were rarely replicated, leading to possible bias due to heterogeneous larval rearing conditions among families. To overcome these potential problems, we used a mixed-family approach with subsequent parentage analysis. A recently developed set of three multiplexed microsatellite markers was used to determine parentage in a complete factorial cross between 12 males and 4 females. Larvae were reared at two different temperatures (20 and 26°C) to provide a contrast resembling wild versus hatchery conditions.... |

The objective of this study was to compare the yield and genetic relationships between two Perla garlic selections, obtained by individual selection of cloves, and commercial varieties and cultivars adapted to diverse regions of Mexico (which did not have a selection process). Varieties with fewer cloves showed higher yields. Coreano and California produced 20 ton/ha (fresh weight) and Perla selections between 17-19 ton/ha (fresh weight). Six primers of the series OPB were tested for genetic characteriza-tion and OPB-17 was selected. With the amplified DNA fragments, a binary matrix was generated; afterwards, a dissimilarity matrix and dendrogram were developed. High genetic diversity was found among all varieties, which were separated into two groups... |

Two paternal broiler lines (LL and LLc, originated from the same stock in 1998) of Embrapa Suinos e Aves genetic program were used. Line LL had been selected for eight generations for rapid growth while LLc had been mated randomly, without selection, as a control line. In the last generation, 30 males and 240 females were used in hierarchical matings with pedigree control to determine sire effect. The same number of birds were used, but matings were at random for LLc. Eggs of both lines were incubated and embryos were collected in different development stages (40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 hours after setting) in order to determine somite number (NOS). The number of evaluated embryos were 1,967 and 498 for LL and LLc, respectively. This study aimed to determine... |
